The plant is used in the treatment of Joint pain and inflammation. This herbal medicinal plant is a climber and as the name suggest the fruits of the plants are like a balloon in shape. The plant is also known as Cardiaspermum halicacabum or Kanphata. Various recipes like Mudakathan keerai dosai thuvaiyal, rasam, soup, adai, kootu, sambar, vadai, kulambu,  are made to consume Mudakathan keerai and to cure joint pains.

Mudakathan keerai dosai : The leaves of the mudakathan keerai plant are added in the dosa batter to make healthy dosas. This plant is very easy for plantation, thus many people grow it in home or kitchen gardens. By plantation of keerai at home you can easily avail the fresh leaves of the plant for a longer time. The leaves of the plant are used internally and as outward therapy for joint pain treatment. It has been proved that the regular use can give positive results in the problem.

The plant is equally beneficial to cure cough and cold. For the other health problems like ear pain, tiredness, weakness and menstrual cramps can be treated with the consumption of this plant. For the ear pain, leaves extracts of the plant are used as ear drops. The poultice made with the leaves of the plant is useful for reduction of pain and inflammation. The plant extracts are useful for the treatment of skin problems like eczema. Add turmeric powder in leaves juice and apply it on affected area.

Here are some of the methods to use Mudakathan keerai for various health problems:

Joint pain medication:For the patients of arthritis and joint pain are suggested to add the leaves of the plant in the dosa batter and consume the dosas two to three times in a week. Also they are suggested to give external application of the leaves poultice on the painful area for the better results. If you want some change in the taste then you can make chutney by using keerai leaves along with other ingredients like urad dal, red dry chilies, coconut, tamarind and salt. This chutney can be consumed with rice and gives the equal benefits.

Cold and cough medication:The soup made with mudakathan keerai is beneficial for treating cold, cough and fever. The spices like peppercorns, cumin seeds, garlic along with the mudakathan keerai leaves are used to make a soup. This soup is the best treatment for the children for cold and cough. It is very nutritious also. 

Mudakathan keerai for hair growth and dandruff: The plant is useful for hair growth and scalp problems like dandruff. Boil leaves of mudakathan keerai in water, sieve and use this water to rinse hair. For making useful hair oil with mudakathan keerai, boil leaves of the plant in sesame oil and use the oil for hair massage. The use of oil and water can solve the problems of dandruff and itchy scalp easily.

Mudakathan keerai oil for joint pain:To use the leaves of the plant externally, the leaves are fried in castor oil on low flame. When then leaves are properly fried, they are tied in soft cotton cloth and used as a poultice or bandage for painful area. When the poultice becomes cold, you can reheat it on hot tawa.
